Selecting the Right Bar Stools for Your Space

In commercial environments such as bars, restaurants and hotels, bar stools play a much bigger role than most people realise. They influence comfort, spacing, traffic flow and long-term durability — not just appearance.

While residential projects may focus heavily on style, commercial settings require the right balance of height, spacing and construction.

There are three main areas to consider: height, spacing and build quality.

Height – Start With the Correct Seat Level

There are generally three standard stool seat heights:

  • 450mm – suited to 750mm tables.
  • 650mm – suited to 900mm counter benches.
  • 750mm – suited to 1050–1100mm bars.

To confirm the correct height, measure from the floor to the underside of your benchtop, then allow approximately 250-300mm clearance between the seat and the bench.

Spacing — Allow Room for the Person

Bar stools need to accommodate the person sitting on them, not just the frame.

As a general guide, allow around 600mm per stool.
This provides enough space for most adults to sit comfortably without feeling restricted.

For example, a 2400mm bench will suit four stools comfortably.
If stools have arms or a wider frame, allow a little extra space to keep the layout feeling open.
Overcrowding immediately affects both comfort and visual balance.

Construction & Style – Built for the Environment

Construction plays a key role in both durability and appearance, and is often considered early in the design process.

Solid timber offers warmth and long-term durability.
Metal frames provide a slim profile and suit high-traffic venues.
Upholstered stools add comfort and softness, particularly in dining settings, and should use commercial-grade materials in busy environments.

The construction should reflect how the space is used — whether it’s a residential kitchen, café, restaurant or hotel bar.

Stability Matters

At higher seat heights, stability becomes more noticeable.

A well-made stool should sit level on the floor, have no wobble and feel solid when weight is applied. Even small movement becomes obvious at bar height.

To Sum it All Up

  • Confirm the correct seat height
  • Allow proper spacing
  • Choose construction suited to the environment
  • Ensure the stool is stable and level
